THE EFFECT OF GRAZING AND SUPERPHOSPHATE ON A NATURALISED LEGUME, DESMODIUM HETEROPHYLLUM, ON HILL LAND IN FIJI

I.J. PARTRIDGE

Abstract

In two grazing trials on hill land in Fiji, hetero (Desmodium heterophyllum) increased in frequency and percentage contribution to total pasture yield under heavier stocking, irrespective of superphosphate application. Fertiliser increased the presentation yields.
Hetero contributed over 45% of the total herbage yield in the open sward of grazed mission grass (Pennisetum polystachyon) at a stocking rate of 3.5 per hectare and also combined well with the creeping Nadi blue grass (Dichanthium caricosum).
Hetero could become an important forage legume for the improvement of hill grazing in the Pacific islands.
