Abstract

Makarikari grass (Panicum coloratum var. makarikariense) is well adapted to self-mulching clay soils in sub-humid summer rainfall environments in the northern wheat belt of Australia. Its origin, introduction into Australia, taxonomy, environmental adaptation and agronomy are reviewed. It is concluded that Makarikari grass will not be widely used in pastures in Australia but may find an important niche in tropical and sub-tropical areas subject to seasonal flooding.
