Tropical Grasslands (1984) Volume 18, 148152 PRELIMINARY STUDIES ON INDIGENOUS SPECIES FOR DRY SEASON GRAZING IN THE NORTHERN GUINEA SAVANNA ZONE OF NIGERIA E.O. ASARE1, Y. SHEHU2 and E.A. AGISHI2
1Institute of Renewable Natural Resources, Department of Wildlife and Range Management, University of Science and Technology, Kumusi, Ghana. Abstract A botanical survey and palatability study at one site at Shika near Zaria in the Northern Guinea Savanna Zone of Nigeria indicated that although Isoberlinia doka was the most abundant species, it was not grazed by cattle. Parinari curatellifolia was the most preferred species. Preliminary agronomic studies showed that some of the legumes browsed and other legumes from the general area and West Africa could be readily established from seed in the field. Of these, the most promising were Desmodium velutinum, Sphenostylis schweinfurthii, Desmodium scorpiurus and Flemingia macrophylla. |
