In memorium John Miles
We are sad to report the death of John Miles earlier this month at his home near Bogota in Colombia. John spent 37 years as a forage breeder with CIAT in Colombia and was known for his unwavering passion and scientific rigor. During his long career in tropical forage breeding, he made significant contributions through the development of the new Urochloa hybrids, including Mulato and Mulato II that are now widely grown in Latin America and gaining popularity in other continents. More recently John also turned his attention to breeding Megathrysus and worked on both grasses until his retirement in 2017.
In memorium Ross Humphreys
We are sorry to report the death of Ross Humphreys in late May. During his long career in tropical forages research, he made significant contributions and published many papers and books and was made a fellow of the Tropical Grassland Society of Australia. He was a university professor, teaching grassland science at the University of Queensland for many years (1966- late 1990s) where he mentored countless students from developing countries. Ross was a towering figure in the International Grassland Congress and chair of the IGC Continuing Committee during the early 1980s and was actively involved until he gave the closing address at the Brazilian IGC in 2001.
En memoria de Yocasta Soto de Rosa
Con gran dolor participamos que el 27 de febrero (Día de la Independencia de la República Dominicana) nos dejó la Ing. Yocasta Soto de Rosa, pionera de la investigación en pasturas en la República Dominicana. Ella participó activamente en los trabajos de la Red Internacional de Evaluación de Pasturas Tropicales (RIEPT), liderada por el Programa de Forrajes Tropicales del Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT), con el apoyo financiero del Centro Internacional de Investigaciones para el Desarrollo de Canadá (CIID).
Yocasta fue la primera ingeniera agrónoma de la República Dominicana, quien obtuvo su grado en la Universidad de Barcelona (España) en 1968, donde fue becada por el gobierno dominicano, pues la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) aún no ofrecía ese grado. Posteriormente participó en cursos de especialización en pastos y lechería en Australia, Nueva Zelanda, Puerto Rico y Colombia.
En su carrera profesional en República Dominicana destaca el haber sido Líder del Programa de Pastos y Forrajes y Directora del Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Pecuarias (CENIP) y Encargada del Programa Nacional de Producción Animal en la Dirección de Ganadería del Ministerio de Agricultura. Además, fue Docente del curso de Pastos en la Universidad Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU), la Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (UCAMAYMA) y el Instituto Superior de Agricultura (ISA). Por sus contribuciones al desarrollo de la agropecuaria nacional el gobierno dominicano le otorgó la Medalla al Mérito de la Orden Duarte, Sánchez y Mella.
Yocasta ha dejado una huella imborrable en el sector pecuario dominicano no solo por sus aportes en la investigación en pastos, sino también por su contribución en la formación de nuevos cuadros de profesionales en el área de Pastos y su liderazgo en la promoción de jóvenes investigadores en diferentes ramas de la zootecnia. Algunos de sus discípulos continúan su trabajo en el Instituto Dominicano de Investigaciones Agropecuarias y Forestales (IDIAF) y en las universidades públicas y privadas del país. Paz a sus restos y mucha fortaleza a su familia y colegas dominicanos.
In Memoriam: Prof. Dr. Rainer Schultze-Kraft
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Rainer Schultze-Kraft, a friend, colleague and mentor, whose experience and in depth understanding of tropical forages made him an outstanding forage scientist. Rainer dedicated his career to tropical forage research and development, working at CIAT and University of Hohenheim. He was an avid germplasm collector and added a total of 9,680 forage accessions to global collections. He was one of the original team to work on the tropical forages interactive selection tool to support use of forages and one of the founders of the Tropical Grasslands-Forrajes Tropicales journal, acting as managing editor and guiding the journal through the early years. His passing leaves a big gap in the tropical forages community that will be hard to fill and he will be sorely missed by his friends and colleagues.
